Comments from the Sec/Tres

June 2007

This years State Tournament attracted 139 Singles entries and 87 Doubles and Mixed Double teams. Brevard County Horseshoe Club proved to be an excellent host for this event. The facility was in top shape and enjoyed by the guest. The three person team was held on Monday and Tuesday of the tournament week making this a full week of pitching. The Three Person team tournament will be on the agenda for the next Executive Council meeting. Only eighteen members pitched in this year’s tournament.  I have heard comments stating the like of or disliking the format, and that it is too expensive to spend a complete week.

The banquet was attended by 111 members and guest. The meal and service was excellent. My congratulations to the special award winners and the new inductees into the Hall Of Fame, Bob Zumbahlen, Ralph Cantrell, Debbie Burrows, Don Burrows Sr. and Charlie Thornsburg. The Women’s and Elders Championship classes both had play off games Saturday causing a late finish. With this confusion I did not think to check for a Triple Crown Winner. My congratulations to Ron Deckard for winning this prestigious award the second time.

Congratulations to this year’s election winners and champion and class winners.

Thanks to Bob and Verdell Woollard for contributing $150 to this year’s State Tournament championship class winners.

Condolences to Marvin Grubb on the passing of his wife Sam during the week of the state tournament. For many years Sam prepared and served food for the Brevard tournaments and was best know for preparing food and bar tending for the Thursday and Friday State Tournament parties.

Again this year Brevard County will host two summer tournaments. We realize these tournaments are not for every one because of the heat. These tournaments have been well attended in the past. They help those of us staying here for the summer stay on top of our game. For those heading north or vacationing have a safe and healthy summer. Remember to pack your horseshoes and drive safely. Roberta and I are looking forward to seeing all of you this fall season.

REMEMBER: WE PROMOTE BY OUR ACTIONS ON AND OFF THE COURTS. REMAIN PROFESSIONAL.
