COMMENTS FROM THE 4TH VP

After 23 years as a member of the Executive Council, 16 years as Sec/Tres. And 7 years as 4th VP, I have decided to resign as the FSHPA Inc.’s 4th VP for personal reasons.  I was appointed state statistician for several years during the 26 years I have been a member o the FSHPA Inc.  I will continue as the Editor of the FSHPA Inc.’s quarterly Newsletter and as the web master for the FSHPA Inc.’s Internet web site at least for the near future or as long as the President maintains my appointments.

I believe that most of my contributions to the FSHPA Inc. has been to changes in the State Championship tournament.  In 1982 we had a membership of just over 100 and only 32 men participated in the State tournament. We have had a record number of 159 to participate in the tournament 6 years ago at Clearwater.  There were no women or senior players in 1982.  Today almost half the participants are women and seniors.  There was no doubles competition let alone the mixed doubles in 1982.  This year we expect up to 50 teams in the mixed doubles competition.  And let us not forget the cocktail parties on Thursday and Friday nights at the tournament.  All of the above I either initiated or played a major part in their addition to the State Tournament.

Several years ago I stated that I would like to see the State Tournament run for a week and would work towards that end.  As a result I initiated the Three Person Team Tournament to be played on Monday and Tuesday of the tournament week.  This tournament is not a State Championship Tournament but is directed by the Executive Council and has been a part of the tournament week for the last five years.

Although I will not be a member of the Executive Council I will continue to be an ardent supporter of the FSHPA Inc. and the game of horseshoes.
